James Valdez with Panavision camera

James Valdez is a Los Angeles based cinematographer whose work is rooted in story, faces, movement, and the discipline of the set.

James first fell in love with cinema as a teenager working as a projectionist, spending long hours around film prints, light, and the rhythm of movies. After serving six years in the U.S. Army, he brought that same discipline and sense of leadership into filmmaking, eventually studying film at UCLA and continuing to build a career across narrative, commercial, documentary, and music-driven productions.

On set, James works with a practical, collaborative mindset. He is comfortable operating camera, shaping light, working with directors, supporting crews, and solving the everyday problems that come with production. His images are often character-first: faces, atmosphere, texture, and emotional clarity guide the frame.

His work has screened at film festivals across the United States, and his projects include award-winning shorts, independent narratives, documentary pieces, fashion visuals, and commercial collaborations. He is an ASC Vision mentee, SOC Associate Member, UCLA TFT alum, and Army veteran.
